Addiction treatment options for Waltham residents
People from Waltham come to GBAC at different points in their recovery. Some need daily structure. Others need flexible care that works around a job, school or family. We offer a full continuum of care so you can get the level of support that actually fits your life. Every program uses evidence-based therapy, trauma-informed care and practical skills you can use outside of treatment.
Detox placement for Waltham residents
If medical detox is needed before starting treatment, we help coordinate safe, appropriate detox placement in the Greater Boston area. That includes clinically supervised withdrawal, medication support when it's appropriate, and a direct line into PHP or IOP once detox is done. Many people from Waltham start with detox, then step right into structured outpatient treatment.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our day treatment program (PHP) is full-day programming, five days a week, with individual, group and family therapy, case management, relapse prevention and medication management when it's needed. You return home to Waltham each evening. It's the highest level of outpatient care we offer.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our evening treatment program (IOP) gives you structured therapy several days a week, with skills for emotional regulation and stress, relapse prevention and accountability, while you keep up with work, school or caregiving. Many people from Waltham start here, or step down into it after PHP.
Outpatient Program (OP)
Our outpatient program offers ongoing therapy and support for long-term recovery. It's a good fit if you're stepping down from a higher level of care, want flexible ongoing support, already attend AA, NA or another recovery group, or are rebuilding routine and stability.

Clinical assessment
A licensed clinician talks with you about your history, symptoms and goals, and recommends the level of care that fits your real life.

A steady routine of group and individual therapy, skills work and, when appropriate, medication management, adjusted to your needs.
Family involvement, when helpful
When it helps, we offer family therapy and keep loved ones updated as part of your plan.
Continued support and next steps
We check in regularly, track progress, and help you plan what comes after this level of care so support doesn't stop when the program does.
Addiction in Waltham and Middlesex County
While geographically close to Boston, Waltham has its own community identity, and treatment works best when it’s tailored to that community. For 2024, the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services Dashboard recorded 24 any-substance-related deaths and 1,039 emergency room visits in Waltham (a 3% increase from the previous year), with 159 people admitted to treatment services (excluding MAT). Middlesex County as a whole saw 496 deaths and 19,464 emergency room visits. These numbers point to a growing need for professional behavioral health treatment in Waltham and the surrounding county.
